THIS
Saturday 28th January 2012 from midday to midnight I am doing
a MEGAGIGATHON for the Richard Ely children's music trust.
At
The Portsmouth Hoy, Poole Quay, Dorset BH15 1HJ TEL: 01202 673517
Jeremy the
publican is in full support, and is helping with the organisation...and
will be doing his usual excellent bar food.
Singing Jazz and Blues for 12 hours... ( with
a relay of accompanists including Rob Koral-guitar, Phil Doyle-piano,
Gianni Chiarello-guitar and Mike Relf-guitar, Eve-piano and Stan
Cockerham-blues guitar). Various musician friends have agreed
to come and join in with me for some numbers, including the very
popular, virtuoso tenor saxophone player Ian Ellis. We also have
a couple of special guests. (and sitters in welcome).
Of course we would love as many people as possible
to come along on the day and help with keeping the atmosphere
buzzing so I can get through the 12 hours!!!.... If people are
unable to come and would like to support the trust, donations
can be made via the website... (details of how to use 'gift aid'
is on the website)
It is in aid of The Richard Ely Children's Music
Trust which is a Dorset based charity that helps young people
with music lessons, instruments, grants and courses etc..
Here is the
excellent, and very informative website.... a very interesting
read. www.therichardelytrust.org.uk
The charity has helped us for the last three years
with a residential string course for Bonnie which she loves and
benefits from enourmously - (pic of her on the contact page of
the website). With 3 children all wanting to play 2 instruments...
as you know the bills are enormous. The trust is invaluable in
that it enables talented young musicians to continue with their
lessons/studies though to collage level, as well as giving keen
young people a chance at something they would not otherwise be
able to afford to do.
The website explains very fully and clearly what
it's about, 'how it helps', 'how you can help', 'contact details',
and who the patrons and trustees are, which includes Dame Emma
Kirkby.
Hope to see
you there

ZOE
SCHWARZ - JAZZ & BLUES
“THE bluesy vocals of Zoe Schwarz are seriously special….
add the guitar work of partner Rob Koral … and you have
a jazz band to die for.”
by Jeremy Miles BOURNEMOUTH DAILY ECHO September
2010, Live review @ Forest Arts Centre
It’s fair to say that Poole based singer
Zoe Schwarz has genuinely made an impact on the UK Jazz and Blues
scene these past nine years. Having originally trained as a classical
singer Zoe’s ability to excel and be highly individual and
expressive in the moody and sultry Billie Holiday type genre,
came to the attention of established guitarist Rob Koral during
a chance meeting and jam session in 2002. To be specific the song
in question was ‘Lover Man’, the classic jazz ballad
made famous by Billie Holiday.
From this point on Zoë and Rob's musical
partnership has gone from strength to strength. Initially performing
in local wine-bars, and progressing quickly to established venues.
By 2005 Zoe had played a week’s residency at the world famous
Jazz club Ronnie Scott’s in London opposite Monty Alexander
and her first jazz festival; the nationally acclaimed Swanage
Jazz festival. She has since had a busy gigging and recording
schedule with several tracks featured on BBC radio 2 & 3.
Zoë and Rob’s musical partnership
has been described as “one of the most engagingly natural
partnerships in jazz”. Chris Parker, Vortex Jazz
Blues Matters Issue 64 2012
Over the past five or six years a quiet revolution,
or rather evolution, has been taking place on the south coast
of England. The rise of the Baddest (i.e. Goodest) Blues Band
is nothing short of phenomenal, with all six musicians contributing
to high quality, original and inventive jazz and blues music……
If talent, dedication and sincerity count for anything then the
profile of these rising stars will continue to grow, with their
music receiving the acclamation and recognition it deserves. You
can check them out on www.bluecommotion.com The Bishop
The Baddest Blues Band has now been renamed Zoe

MOON - DORSET BIGGEST AND BEST COUNTRY BAND GIG DATES
“Neon
Moon were formed in March 2009, by members of the award-winning
Dorset country band “Country Pride”, who decided to
get back out there, after a layoff.
Trevor Dyson, the lead singer, placed adverts online and, together
with Mike Wrixton, pedal steel, and Steve Sykes, harmonica, held
auditions, where Adrian Delso was picked for bass guitar and backing
vocal duties
and Steve Butterworth on drums. The guitar chair is currently
being filled very ably by friends from other country bands on
a temporary basis , so if you’re a country picker, please
get in touch.
Neon Moon first came to public attention with a series of gigs
at the ever-popular Anonymous Travelling Markets and have gradually
built up a reputation as a standout club act. Their repertoire
is chosen from the whole canon of country music from Hank Williams
to more modern artistes, such as Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Brad
Paisley and Ricky Skaggs. Dancers love their strict tempo numbers
and everyone gets a guilty pleasure from the classic weepies!”

THE
5th SWANAGE BLUES & ROOTS FESTIVAL – 7, 8, 9 October
2011
All gone...
except for the memories, photos, videos, and lots of smiles! “The
best one yet” was said on more than one occasion. Thanks
to everybody who took part, it really was a wonderful weekend.
A special mention for The Bucketeers (applause!) without whom
there would not be a festival. These wonderful people, headed
up by Maggie Rodway, are fans like you who give up their own time
over the weekend to collect the money that keeps the festivals
going. Thank you too for giving, but now I need you to do something
else for me...
FEEDBACK
Please email
me with your comments – about the bands, venues, where you
stayed... anything you want to say. The more information I get,
the more I can fine tune the next festival to make it even better.
Just email info@swanage-blues.org and if you feel like writing
a Review of what you saw, let me have that too – I’m
trying to compile various reviews to make one big one for the
website or even a magazine.
THE
FUTURE OF SWANAGE BLUES
It’s
all good news. This year we’ve had the most amazing publicity
and although we didn’t win the Best British Festival award,
we were contenders along with paying festivals that charge £99
or more and receive massive subsidies. Now then, I’ve been
thinking about what to do for the future.
Swanage Blues
started as a party and works brilliantly as that still. Each festival
brings joy to thousands and how wonderful is that in these times?
Over the past 10 years I’ve tried to offer competitions,
workshops, a more elaborate printed programme etc... but in all
honesty, all these have done is involve me in more work and not
been taken up in sufficient numbers to justify the expense let
alone the time involved.
So now I’m
leaving all that extra stuff to the other festivals... Let's everybody
just enjoy these wonderful weekends and recognise them for what
they are:
The
Best Blues Parties on the South Coast!
Next year
the dates are: the 12th Swanage Blues Festival 2, 3, 4 March 2012;
and the 6th Swanage Blues & Roots Festival 5, 6, 7 October
2012.
TEE
SHIRTS
Stan &
Helen organised great tee-shirts for the last festival and have
a few left. You can contact them via their website www.riversidebluesband.co.uk/

STEVE
DARRINGTON GIGS
I’m
sad to say that I have disbanded my excellent combo featuring
Hugh Budden, Neil Nicholson, Bournemouth Fred and special guest
Martin Johnson. A combination of gig fees being the same as 35
years ago and the limited availability of some members made the
unit unsustainable. Such a shame. However, I am working on solo
performances and the occasional collaborations, and hope to be
active again in the new year.
